About the Wilson Bicentennial

As we enter 2018, Wilson is poised to celebrate its 200th anniversary. A committee was formed over a year ago and we have been meeting to plan events so we can highlight and celebrate our town’s bicentennial. A special logo was chosen from many entries and can be seen at the entry points into our town on special signs commissioned for this year! The committee consists of our current town historian Francis Gallagher, former town historian Charles Horton, current town clerk Diane Muscoriel, past town clerk Wanda Burrows, town board member Brad Clark, Wilson High School secretary Lori Brown, and John Sinclair from the Wilson Historical Society. One guideline we followed was to enhance many of the fantastic events our town already does on an annual basis rather than creating new events from the ground up. Therefore, you may notice a special theme throughout the year as you attend various fun, family filled events celebrating our town’s 200th birthday!

To promote our town’s celebrations, you will soon see many promotional items that have been carefully selected and designed to tastefully commemorate our town’s two hundredth birthday. Items include a special limited-edition calendar, pens, canvas tote bags, drink coasters, shot glasses, t-shirts, ceramic coffee mugs, polo shirts, wine and beer glasses and hats, and woven blankets. Stay tuned for where and how to buy! These items are being sold at cost to our community! Calendars are currently on sale at the Wilson Town Clerk’s office, Amy Lee’s Hair salon, and The Wilson Community Library.
Here is a list of planned events:
- April 7th, celebrations kick off with a special Bicentennial Dinner at the historic Wilson House Inn, at 300 Lake Street from 7-10pm. Town officials and special guests will be on hand for historical proclamations to celebrate the first town meeting back on April 10, 1818. A buffet dinner and special wines from our local wineries are planned. Tickets to go on sale soon!
- May 28th, the 46th Annual Historical Society Memorial Day Fair from 8-4pm. Various family friendly special events are planned this year including “2BarnFarm” petting zoo from Bath NY, and “The Primate Sanctuary” from Niagara Falls will be on hand for an educational presentation! Chiavetta’s BBQ, and many other food vendors and lots to see and do!
- June 9th, Bicentennial Softball game between the village and town to be held in Kruger park. More details and time to follow!
- June 14th, Flag day ceremony and parade with the Wilson Elementary showcasing 200 years of history and traditions in our community! A great event for everyone to support!
- June 16th, Wilson Conservation Club’s annual kid fishing tournament with vintage bamboo poles provided by the town!
- July 14th, Wilson Historical Society Ice Cream social & picnic at the Museum grounds. Food vendors and Wilson’s own Brownie’s Ice cream on site! A Free ice-cream to all who attend! Music and family fun! 1-4pm
- July 14th, Wilson, Tuscarora and Island Yacht Clubs in conjunction with the Town of Wilson to hold a special Wilson Bicentennial Regatta on Lake Ontario!
- July 21st, Bicentennial Fishing Tournament sponsored by Bootlegger’s Cove Marina. Register at Bootlegger’s Cove, Wilson Boatyard gas dock, The Slippery Sinker or the Boat Doctors. Entry deadline is morning of tournament at 630am. More Details to follow!
- July 28th, Historical Presentation, “Remembering Lake Island Park, to be held at Tuscarora State Park pavilion by town historian Francis Gallagher. Time TBD
- August 25th, Wilson #1 Fireman’s field day parade to include special recognition of town’s bicentennial!
- September 8th and 15th – Bicentennial Haunted Cemetery tours of Greenwood Cemetery by Diane Johnson. TBD – weather permitting.
- October 20th, celebration closing ceremony with Time Capsule presentation and dedication!
